Old Fashioned Pastie Slab

We all love our comfort food in winter, so we went searching for the best winter warmer recipes to heat up your kitchen during these chilly winter months. Not only are they tasty, but they are quick, easy and energy efficient too!

We’ll be posting a recipe each week to tantalise your taste buds and get you creative in the kitchen. This week’s recipe comes from the very talented Jody Allen from Stay at Home Mum

The Old fashioned pastie slab is a delicious combination of winter vegetables, sausage meat and Pastry! Not only is this dish super tasty and quick to make but the best part is you can feed your family of four for under $5 – with leftovers, what’s not to love!

Old Fashioned Pastie Slab

  • 2 potatoes peeled and cubed
  • 2 carrots peeled and cubed
  • 1 onion finely diced
  • 1 cup cabbage thinly sliced
  • 1 cup of cheese
  • 500 grams of Mince (sausage)
  • 2 sheets of puff pastry
  • 1 egg
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  1. Chop up all the vegetables fairly roughly (rustic) and steam them until just soft.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix the sausage meat and egg together and break up the sausage meat.
  3. Add the cooked vegetables and the cup of cheese and mix together well.  Season to taste.
  4. In a shallow baking tray, overlap the two pieces of pastry, then pour in the filling, and cover with the pastry joining in the middle (fold it like an envelope).
  5. Brush with the egg, and cook in a medium oven until golden brown all over!
  6. Serve with tomato sauce

Recipe hints and tips

  • For something a bit tastier, add a teaspoon of curry powder!
  • Old Fashioned Pastie Slab is best made fresh and isn't suitable for freezing.
  • Sausage meat is available from the meat section of most supermarkets.
  • You can use any vegetables you like!  Pumpkin, zucchini, broccoli - anything you like!
