Jakarta Noodle Soup

Originating from East Java, this dish is an authentic soup of Jakarta - the capital city of Indonesia. The combination of spices, tender beef and comforting noodles will be sure to warm you this winter.

This delicious soup is often enjoyed with shrimp crackers and accompanied with hot tea (with a little bit of sugar). Enjoy!

This week’s recipe comes from our very own Melvin Widodo from our Business Performance and Intelligence department. 


Jakarta Noodle Soup 


  • 1/2 kg of diced beef
  • 1 Litre of water
  • 2 tablespoons of oil
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 2 lime leaves
  • 1 stick of lemongrass, bruised
  • 1 cube of beef stock
  • 3 spring onions, cut into 1cm length 

Grind ingredients

  • 5 small brown onions
  • 2 gloves of garlic
  • 1 teaspoon ground pepper
  • 1 cm of turmeric
  • 1 cm of fresh ginger
  • 1 tablespoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar


  • Cooked yellow noodles or vermicelli noodles
  • Cabbage, sliced
  • Tomato, sliced
  • Small celery stick, sliced
  • 1 lime cut into wedges
  • Vinegar
  • Spring rolls
  • Potato wedges
  1. Saute grind ingredients until fragrant in a pan
  2. Add bay leaves, lime leaves and spring onions to the pan
  3. Add diced beef, cook until brown
  4. Add water and beef stock and cook until tender
  5. season with salt and pepper
  6. Serve with condiments
