Take off on a Great Winter Escape - Part 2
To continue with the winter escape theme, in this post we’ll look at the cool things to do in Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales. These fabulous destinations showcase the spectacular surrounds that abound across Australia and the many ways in which to enjoy them. Here are a few highlights.
Ski, board or Toboggan in Victoria
Snow-capped mountains are plentiful in Victoria where you’ll find hundreds of ski-runs across ten great alpine locations. Boarders, skiers and tobogganists will love what’s on offer and the snow packed slopes are all just a day trip north from Melbourne. Mt Buller, Falls Creek, Mt Hotham, Lake Mountain, Mt Buffalo and Mt Donna Buang … and more all await.
Mt Buller has a wide range of snow pursuits on offer and ski slopes to suit every ability – from the green runs of Bourke Street, Baldy and Burnt Hut Spur to breathless black runs such as Federation in the south. There are also three great gradients for snowboarding as well as a challenging 9km cross-country trails looking out over Mt Stirling and the Bluff. Ski or snowboard under the stars between July and mid-September.
For snowboarders, Mt Hotham offers gullies, bowls, hits, berms, lips and open stashes. It also accommodates cross-country skiers with its pristine, powder-covered back country on the many free trails, including the Pub to Pub from Mount Hotham’s General Store to the Dinner Plain Hotel. The beautiful Lake Mountain is great for families with its Nordic Park, cross country and ski lessons, snowshoeing and tobogganing.
Experience Tassie’s rugged natural beauty
If hurtling down snow covered hills is for you head to Legges Tor in Ben Lomond National Park in the north, this is great for avid skiers. If you are heading south, Mount Mawson, set in the Mount Field National Park, can accommodate people at all levels of experience.
Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair National Park is perfect for the strollers. The famous Overland Track can be treacherous in winter so take the shorter walks that wind you safely through the scenery which takes in a glistening rainforest. Freycinet National Park is a well-kept secret and perfect for bushwalking the picturesque coast. You’ll experience sea birds, wildflowers, detailed rock pools and the vivid blue-green curves of Wineglass Bay.
Get Festive in New South Wales
Every year from June to August, thousands of people flock to the Blue Mountains for Christmas festivities - roaring fires, roast dinners, sing-alongs and the occasional snowfall.
Enjoy five-course feasts, play detective at a murder mystery evening and cheer for a comedic revue in Katoomba. In Mount Victoria you can challenge Santa to karaoke or raise your glass at a courtly Victorian-era banquet. At the foot of the mountains you can swap Christmas cracker gags as you journey down the Nepean River on a historic paddle steamer.
With all the feasting you have a wealth of beautiful walks to work it all off. Walks of varying lengths take you through World-Heritage listed scenery including Three Sisters - a trio of rocky pinnacles named after an Aboriginal legend - from Katoomba, Wentworth Falls on the edge of the Jamison Valley or explore the underground rivers and chambers of Jenolan Caves.
