Netball Victoria announces the Ultimate Netball Showdown

February 2016

Netball Victoria is excited to announce the cities and towns to host the 2016 Association Championships, proudly supported by Lumo Energy.

Swan Hill, Ballarat, Knox, Doncaster, Geelong, Sale and Shepparton have been selected to host the Championships from Sunday 29 May to Sunday 5 June, with the finals taking place at the State Netball Hockey Centre on Sunday 26 June.

Registrations open 15 February for Victorian Netball Associations and Leagues to participate.

Netball Victoria Competitions Manager Angela Banbury is delighted with the number of Associations and Leagues offering to host the 2016 tournament.

“The Association Championships present a fantastic opportunity for host Associations and Leagues to showcase their facilities and members,” said Ms Banbury.

“I’m looking forward to visiting some familiar venues as well as new locations in 2016, and hope to deliver another fun and exciting tournament.

“On behalf of Netball Victoria, I’d like to thank everyone who submitted an expression of interest and congratulate the communities that have been successful in their application.”

The tournament, which is made possible with the support of Lumo Energy, is a vital part of the Netball Victoria Athlete Development Pathway.

Lumo Energy is entering its third year working in partnership with Netball Victoria and is looking forward to working with the not-for-profit and building on their commitment to athlete development opportunities in grass-roots netball.

Tim Harrington, Lumo Energy Executive General Manager of Marketing and Sales said;

“We are thrilled to announce our ongoing commitment to supporting youth netball in local communities across Victoria. Youth Netball is integral to the lives of many Victorian families, and we are honoured to be able to contribute to its growth.

“Lumo is proud to support the development of the next generation of Victorian netball talent. History has shown us that many Association Championships participants continue on to play at the state and national level.”

Netball Victoria Talent Scouts will attend the tournament again in 2016, identifying gifted athletes in 13/U, 15/U and 17/U age groups across both Championship and Reserve divisions.

Athletes who are talent-identified in the Association Championships are invited to attend and participate in Zone Academy and State Team screening days. The competition is therefore pivotal in the athlete development pathway, providing opportunities for athletes to gain positions within Netball Victoria High Performance programs.

In 2015, more than 500 athletes from Association Championships were talent identified. Of these, 29 athletes were invited to 17/U State Team screening days and 22 were invited to 19/U State Team screening days.

This athlete development pathway helped Australian Diamond and Melbourne Vixen Madi Robinson reach her potential, competing in her first Association Championships in 2000 in the 13/U division.

Netballers from more than 220 Associations and Leagues throughout Victoria will have the opportunity to compete.
